Watford sack Rob Edwards and appoint Slaven Bilic as head coach

Watford has sacked head coach Rob Edwards and appointed Slaven Bilic after just 11 matches in charge. The Croatian has signed an 18-month contract with the club. The former was appointed after the club’s relegation from the Premier League. He made a good start to the season with seven points from the first three games but managed a solitary win in the last eight games. Edwards becomes the 17th manager to lose their job since the Pozzo family took over in 2012.

“I think this change is in the club’s best interests, as with other choices made by the Board,” Watford owner Gino Pozzo said after the sacking of Rob Edwards. “Rob had plenty of opportunity to reveal the character of his team, but performances haven’t lived up to our expectations. Slaven Bilic, an experienced coach with recent Premier League promotion experience, is the man we have hired to help us move forward.”

“Given the structure of Watford, its development, and the Pozzo family’s aspirations, it would be ridiculous to claim that it was a major surprise. 10 games in the Championship seems to be enough time for Edwards to prove who he is; this is the cutting edge of professional management,” David Prutton said. “Reading, QPR, Sunderland, Blackburn, Rotherham, and Bristol City are all listed above Watford in the table if they are comparing how Burnley and Norwich are performing. There may be something to that. The owners want to give Slaven Bilic enough time to mount a promotion campaign as the next man. The goal of that team is an immediate promotion back to the Premier League. The haste with which the new hire was selected illustrates how brutally competitive the football industry is.”
