Southampton has confirmed the appointment of former Luton coach Nathan Jones as their head coach on a three-year contract. Jones, who has left Luton to take over the Saints, signed his contract with the Premier League team on Wednesday before seeing them defeat Sheffield Wednesday in a Carabao Cup penalty shootout. Coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan will accompany him, and the Championship club will receive a settlement of almost £2.5 million.
“I feel incredibly honored to have been given this chance. Since moving here to St. Mary’s, I have learned a lot about the club, which is a fantastic football team,” Southampton head coach Nathan Jones said. “It certainly helps that many members of my family support Southampton. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity, and I can’t wait to get going. Since I started coaching or managing, I’ve always dreamed of managing in the Premier League, but this club in particular really appeals to me because of the way it’s run, the way it’s organized, and the way they go beyond just results.”
Jones was in charge of Luton for the second time; the first time, he guided the team to the Championship Play-Off Semifinals, where they fell to Huddersfield. When he was first hired, he also led the team to automatic promotion from League Two. Jones departed the team in 2019 to join Stoke, but after nine fruitless months as manager, he was fired and came back to the Hatters in May of the following year. After 20 games, Luton sits ninth in the Championship, two points off of the play-off spots. Following their 4-1 loss to Newcastle on Monday, Southampton fired Hasenhuttl, who has been in command of the team for almost four years.
