Ricciardo change could be Lungaards Chance

An 18-year-old driver says that Daniel Ricciardo’s looming decision could also be the key to his Formula 1 racing future.

Last week, we announced that Renault’s hottest ‘academy’ driver, Formula 2 driver Christian Lundgaard, was in position for the race seat should Ricciardo want to go away the French team at the top of 2020.

Lundgaard, from Denmark, confirms this on his own.

“It’s not in my hands,” he told BT newspaper. “And maybe not in Renaults either. I feel they’re expecting what Ricciardo does. Him leaving the team might be my chance.”

However, he acknowledges that the corona crisis may be a big think about the work, and not only because it’s actually stopping him from having the super license points he wants.

“It’s hard to answer if I’m ready for Formula 1 in 2021 – I’ve only done one Formula 2 race, and nobody knows when the 2020 season will start again,” said Lundgaard.

“Renault expects me to be ready if the chance presents itself. Fortunately, I’m quick to find out and good at adapting to new surroundings.”

Lundgaard also replied to Kevin Magnussen’s comment in the week that virtual ‘play’ racing isn’t an honest way for a driver to coach for real racing.

“Of course it isn’t an equivalent as driving on the track, but I feel it is a generational issue,” he said.

“Drivers of my age have grown up with sim racing. To us, it feels natural.

“In fact, I feel you’ll learn tons, both in terms of driving on the track but maybe even more about fixing the cars. I feel you get smarter all the time.”
