Thomas Tuchel, head coach of Chelsea, reflected on the signing of an 18-month deal with a season-long extension option.
“At first, it annoyed me. All was completed in 72 hours and I didn’t like the duration of the contract at first. I assumed I wasn’t trusted. It wasn’t easy, because I had to leave my country, my family and our team in fourth place were also far behind.
There is always a risk of not being in the top four, so in that case, it will be convenient for me to be fired,” Tuchel told Rio Ferdinand.
“But I was wondering after a few minutes: what difference does that make? I raised it off my shoulders with that weight. My deal will be extended if the club likes my job.
If I don’t work well enough, if we don’t get the outcomes we need, if I don’t like the management, then they will fire me anyway. For five years, you can sign a deal, and then they’ll shoot you. But there isn’t any need to think about it.
Have I got faith in myself? Yeah. Yes. In the club, in the squad, am I sure that this is the right league for me? Oh, yes, yes. But it’s not important to think about the numbers.”
