Tottenham Hotspur suffers a humiliating loss in the Europa League

Tottenham Hotspur was disqualified from the UEFA Europa League after falling to Dinamo Zagreb 3-0 in the second leg of their Round of 16 ties. Spurs took a 2-0 lead into the game but were derailed by an inspiring effort from Mislav Orsic, who scored a hat-trick to advance Zagreb to the competition’s quarter-finals.

The tie was flipped on its head by the Croatian’s second-half brace, which sent the game into extra time. While Spurs were by far the favorites to progress to the next round, Orsic completed his hat trick in the second half of extra time to help Dinamo Zagreb pull off a major upset.

Spurs now have only a small hope of winning some silverware this season as a result of the defeat. They are eighth in the Premier League and face dropping lower down the ladder if they continue to play as they have.

Jose Mourinho is still under heavy criticism after his team lost the north London derby to Arsenal over the weekend and was disqualified from the Europa League.

Spurs’ last shot at silverware will be in the Carabao Cup, but they will meet Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the final. Winning the EFL Cup will provide Spurs with an additional path to the Europa League next season.

If Mourinho’s team fails to qualify for European competition next season, the Portuguese boss faces dismissal.

On that point, here are the best tweets following Tottenham’s defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.
