Ole Gunnar Solskjaer maintained that after their comprehensive victory over Real Sociedad, Manchester United was only a “work in progress”

By thrashing Sociedad 4-0 in a round of 32 first leg encounter at the Juventus Stadium in Turin on Thursday night, United put one foot in the last-16 of the Europa League.

The Red Devils bounced back with a superb attacking performance against the La Liga outfit from a poor draw at West Brom in the Premier League, but Solskjaer maintains his squad is still “learning” during an up and down season.

After the match, the United boss said to BT Sport: “We scored some good goals and played some nice football.”

We deserved to win with four goals, but maybe not. We can be a dangerous team on a night like this when we find space.

We had to defend well, they had some great players up front and we won the right to quickly counter-attack. They opened up and we got the rooms we needed.

You are assaulted by every squad, it’s about finding the moments to find space. We are a work in progress, we are improving and we have recently been unable to win any games.

With just 27 minutes of the clock, the Red Devils discovered the breakthrough against Imanol Alguacil’s side, as Fernandes capitalized on a mix-up in the Sociedad defense to shoot into an empty net.

Just before the hour mark, the Portuguese doubled his account, delivering an expert finish after being set up by Daniel James, and United subsequently proceeded to apply pressure on the counter-attack.

In the 64th minute, Marcus Rashford netted his 17th goal of the season to bring Solskjaer’s men out of reach before James rounded off the stoppage time scoring, leaving Sociedad with a mountain to conquer on February 25 at Old Trafford in the second leg.
