Scott Parker questions the handball rule

After his side was denied a deserved equalizer in a 1-0 loss to Spurs, Fulham manager Scott Parker challenged the handball rule.

The International Football Association Board meeting on Friday, where more clarity on the handball law is required, could not come at a better time for the Cottagers, who had a goal disallowed due to the harsh rule.

After Tosin Adarabioyo’s own goal gave Spurs the lead in the first half, Josh Maja put the ball in the back of the net for Parker’s team. However, replays revealed that the ball had cannoned into Mario Lemina’s hand from a Davinson Sanchez clearance when he was just a few yards away during the build-up.

VAR applied the rules, which Parker acknowledges, but he claims his side did not achieve a clear advantage.

He said of the handball regulation, “It has changed so much. We think back to the beginning of the season when the rules were very different and fines were being handed out week after week, and we were talking about changing the art of defending and defending with your arms behind your back.

I understand why the target was not granted, and I understand the law. The law does not sit well with me. I’m not upset about it; the referee is following the rules. VAR allows you to look back to see if there is a definite benefit. I don’t believe we did.

The issue is that we’re trying to make the game so pure and sterile, and we’re trying to monitor every single move or moment to an utter T. We want to see goals and enthusiasm, but I’m afraid VAR is destroying all of those things. You’re missing the raw passion of a game that we adore.”

Jose Mourinho, the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, chose not to comment on the matter, claiming that the laws are subject to interpretation.

He said, “My opinion is irrelevant; I don’t make decisions.” “Because the law allows for clarification, you must follow the official’s interpretation. It works for you sometimes, and it works against you at other times.”
