Scholes: Marcus to learn from Van Nistelrooy

News

Manchester United great Paul Scholes opened the door to the characteristics that made Ruud van Nistelrooy the best finisher he played at the club with and claims that Marcus Rashford has the skills to follow suit.

He has played alongside a variety of legendary players in his long and respected career at Old Trafford, including Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Eric Cantona, Mark Hughes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Carlos Tevez and Teddy Sheringham.

He believes, however, that Van Nistelrooy has risen to the top in terms of scoring, and is confident that Rashford will also prove to be a center-forward success despite more generally playing off the left over the past few years.

“For a season, I played number 10 with Ruud-and I loved it. He’s such a brutal, brutal goal scorer. He’s such lived to score goals. Each time he scored or didn’t score the first thing he’d do when we got on the team bus after the game was to see if Thierry Henry scored,” Scholes told the Manchester United podcast.

“And if Henry had scored, he wouldn’t speak to anybody for the entire trip home because he was so excited about being the top goal scorer, not only in the United but in the country, anywhere in the world. I loved the way Ruud finished as well. I played with some amazing center-forwards. You’re thinking of Cole, Dwight Yorke, Sheringham, and Solskjaer. There are tons.

“I always remember seeing Marcus in the reserve team when he was a midfield player out and out. Often I would go to the games and just watch him and not even see where the ball was. I would look for his movement-is he smart enough to have the link with a midfield player? I think he’s got it. Once he first came into the team I was so excited, a little nervous at first-I thought someone was hurt.

“But ever since he’s joined the squad, he’s shown the potential he’s got as a center-forward or a player wide on the left. I still remember watching him as a kid, and I thought his intellect and agility were like a center-forward. He looked like a number nine out and out, but now you’re seeing him in games, he seems to enjoy it more from the left.”

So far, Rashford has made 201 senior US appearances, scored 64 goals, and assisted 31.
