Mohamed Salah has confirmed that he has “special motivation” for Liverpool’s first Champions League match against Real Madrid since the club’s 2018 final defeat.
Liverpool will face Zinedine Zidane’s side in the quarter-finals on Tuesday for the first time since Sergio Ramos’ catch on Salah, Loris Karius’s mistakes, and Gareth Bale’s impressive overhead kick created an incredibly eventful game in Kyiv.
In an interview with Marca, Salah played down talk of avenging Ramos for the incident that forced him out of 2018 final with a shoulder injury. Nonetheless, he admitted that the events of that night had stuck with him.
“Let’s just claim that I have extra incentive to win the tie and advance to the semi-finals,” Liverpool’s top scorer said. What happens now will have little impact on the outcome of the final in Kyiv. That is a thing of the past.”
