Borja Mayoral scored on a long pass from Bryan Cristante, and Alan Patrick had a shot deflected by Gonzalo Villar and another smothered by Pau Lopez. Anatolii Trubin dashed outside his area to clear one-on-one with Mayoral, who had set an offside trap on an Amadou Diawara ball. Junior Moraes delivered a soaring header from inches out. Roger Ibanez looked vulnerable after colliding heads with teammate Marash Kumbulla and was taken off at halftime.
Rick Karsdorp burst down the right flank and dragged the ball back into the six-yard box, where Kryvstsov made a desperate interception that only helped to set up Borja Mayoral’s header.
It should have been 2-0 seconds later when Pedro was sent clear, but he scuffed the finish wide from 12 yards out with just the goalkeeper to beat.
A few minutes later, Carles Perez was just as poor, turning past the far post from even closer at the end of a well-worked pass, while Trubin did well to parry a Mayoral header.
Karsdorp was booked for an unnecessary lunge on Tete and would miss the first leg of the quarter-finals.
Shakhtar Donetsk’s Alan Patrick nodded on Tete’s cross at the back post, allowing Junior Moraes to sneak in unnoticed at the other stick. Mayoral and Roma scored their second away goal after Yevhen Konoplyanka came off the bench and pushed Pau Lopez into a save.
In a well-executed all-Spanish transfer, Carles Perez charged onto Pedro’s through ball, drew the goalkeeper out, and rolled across for Mayoral to tap in from six yards.
Pau Lopez had to stretch to tip Marlos’ scorcher past the post as Trubin bolted off his line to close down Perez.
