Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City should concentrate on the positives of a 21-game winning streak rather than the negatives of their derby day loss to Manchester United on Sunday.
The Red Devils won a celebrated local victory at the Etihad Stadium thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ fast penalty and Luke Shaw’s neat shot, ending their rivals’ incredible record-breaking streak.
Although acknowledging that his team was outclassed upfront by their opponents, the Blues boss believes the real story should be their near-two-dozen-game success, which they will use to motivate them for the rest of the season.
“Because we lost, we’ll be in the papers,” the Spaniard told Sky Sports.
“However, the good news is that we’ve won 21 games in a row. We still have 30 points to play, and we need to start winning again. That’s how football works. It occurs from time to time. It was an incredible game.”
United is a high-pressing team that is lightning fast on the offensive. We performed admirably. We couldn’t be more clinical upfront, so we congratulate United instead.
“It’s the same every time. We finish one game and move on to the next. It’s the same situation here. We lose this one, so we move on to the next. It’s a teaching moment. We played very well even though we were down 2-0.”
Guardiola also commented on his team’s results in comparison to their narrow victory over West Ham last weekend, claiming that his team performed better against United than they did against David Moyes’ Hammers.
“We played much, much worse against West Ham than we did today. We didn’t deserve to win against West Ham, and we didn’t deserve to lose today,” he told BBC Sport.
Before kick-off, the Spaniard had just lost as many games against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils as he had against Liverpool and Chelsea – and they are now his greatest crutch outright.
