On Sunday, Monaco stunned Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 away from home to throw open the title race of Ligue 1, with head coach Niko Kovac explaining that the goal of his side was to nullify Kylian Mbappe.
In PSG’s 4-1 victory over Barcelona in midweek, the attacker scored a hat-trick and came into the match against his former club with all the defensive attention on him due to injuries to Neymar and Angel Di Maria.
Mbappe was almost completely neutralized, hardly allowing a straightforward touch, while Sofiane Diop and Guillermo Maripan’s goals at the opposite end gave Monaco victory.
Kovac told Canal+ the secrets behind the success of Monaco.
“I am very pleased with my team’s results. PSG is a brilliant squad. For 90 minutes, we played hard and we deserved the victory,’ he said.
“They didn’t have many options. I have my players to congratulate.
Our plan? Our plan? Kylian Mbappe had to be erased because he’s a big striker. By putting three or four players on him, we had to deprive him of the ball.
We showed another Monaco face in defense because we didn’t concede a lot of chances.
“It was great tonight. It’s what we wanted.
For the second time, we managed to beat PSG, and now we’re heading home and going to rest.
Are we willing to finish in the top three? As I said earlier, we primarily need to increase the distance between the fifth and sixth teams. There are still a lot of games remaining, and if we have a chance to close the gap, we’re going to do it. But we’re not at the stage of the first three yet.”
