Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais drew 1-1 at Stade Velodrome in Ligue 1 action on Sunday, putting Rudi Garcia’s side three points behind league leaders Lille OSC and Jorge Sampaoli’s new side outside of the European qualifying spots as he takes over. The Argentine was not on the bench this weekend, but he would have seen OM come back from a goal down to draw with their 10-man opponents.

After 21 minutes, Lyon took the lead through Karl Toko Ekambi, but Marseille equalized on the stroke of half-time thanks to Arkadiusz Milik’s controversial penalty following Lucas Paqueta’s handball. As the game heated up in the second half, neither side could find a winner, and Paqueta was sent off, leaving Lyon with ten players.

Jorge Sampaoli will arrive in Marseille this week to begin his new job as OM coach, and he will have seen enough of the Lyon game to know he has a big job ahead of him. Les Phoceens are currently in seventh place, without a chance of qualifying for Europe, and Frank McCourt’s plans for the future, with Pablo Longoria as Chairman, will necessitate some form of continental football. Regardless of the final Ligue 1 spot, Sampaoli will have to make do with the squad he inherits from Andre Villas-Boas through Nasser Larget, knowing that major changes will be made this summer.
