In the Premier League, Manchester United returned to winning ways as they posted a 3-1 win over Newcastle at Old Trafford.

In recent weeks, a string of poor results have all but ended the unlikely title challenge for United, but this was a game in which they consolidated their place in the top four.

After an impressive solo run, Marcus Rashford opened the scoring, before Allan Saint-Maximin equalized for the visitors following some dubious defending from the home side.

Until Bruno Fernandes gave the hosts breathing room from the penalty spot after Rashford had been dropped in the box, Daniel James, inspired by his success in Turin in midweek, restored United’s lead with a drilled finish from close range that went in at the post.

The 17-year-old Shola Shoretire had a late debut after he was an unused substitute against Real Sociedad.
