Pep Guardiola felt that his Man City side was too shy in the first half of the first leg against Paris Saint-Germain. He added that he was delighted to come away with a 2-1 lead. Man City put up a spectacular second-half performance to come back from a goal down. Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez scored a goal each.

Mauricio Pcohettino upset Man City when he was the coach of Tottenham a couple of years ago. He looked on course to do so yet again after Marquinhos headed them ahead early in the first half. An Idrissa Gueye sending off changed the complexion of the match and Man City took control.

“If we play shy and not who we are, then anything can happen as they have the quality to turn it around,” Guardiola said. “But if we play with quality as we did in the second half maybe we’ll have the chance to reach the final.”

“The first 15 minutes at Borussia Dortmund was the same, the first half at home vs Dortmund was the same. Everyone had the desire but we have to learn,” he added. “It’s just the second time in our history we’re at this stage. Nearly 80 percent of the players have never played in a Champions League semi-final. It’s not like other teams. It’s a process. I have to convince them that when we are who we are everything will be easier. Hopefully, that will happen in the next game.”

No English side in the history of the Champions League has lost after having won the first leg. Pep Guardiola sent a clear message to his Man City players of not shying away from the occasion. Man City is looking to reach their first Champions League Final in the history of the club. Pep himself has not won the Champions League in over a decade.
