Since Danilo D’Ambrosio tested positive for the coronavirus yesterday, there was still the risk of a larger outbreak involving the whole first unit. And now it seems that those suspicions have come true. Despite getting negative test results all week, Inter announced today that Samir Handanovic is also sick with the virus.
Inter’s captain, along with D’Ambrosio, will play against Sassuolo this weekend. He would be a significant loss for a defense that has held a clean sheet in six of the last ten games. After a shaky start to the season, he’s found his best form in recent weeks, including a memorable trio of excellent saves against Milan. Andrei Radu, 23, could fill in this weekend, while Danielle Padelli is also a possibility.
The greater concern is how much the infection has spread within the team now that we know it isn’t exclusive to D’Ambrosio. Fortunately, the Nerazzurri will have two weeks off after their match against Sassuolo to rest and cope with any outbreaks.
The most significant factor in coping with this illness is Handanovic’s fitness. Hopefully, he and D’Ambrosio recover well and without any serious side effects.
