According to Gary Neville, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to win a trophy this season to show that Manchester United has made real progress.

United improved their Premier League top-four chances with a 1-0 victory over fifth-placed West Ham on Sunday, thanks to an own goal from Craig Dawson in the second half.

Solskjaer’s team now sits second in the league, following their derby victory over runaway leaders Manchester City a week ago.

Former Red Devils defender Neville, on the other hand, believes that finishing as the closest team to Pep Guardiola’s title winners is insufficient, citing the value of winning silverware ahead of a potentially crucial transfer window.

United will play Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals, but first, they must face Milan in the second leg of a close Europa League tie. The teams drew 1-1 at Old Trafford last Thursday, with the Italian side scoring a dramatic late equalizer.

“This season, the FA Cup has become crucial for this football team. Over the last 15 to 20 years, the League Cup and FA Cup have been the starting point for Manchester United teams “On his Sky Sports podcast, Neville said.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must not only finish second in the Premier League but also win a trophy if he is to be effective at this club. That would be considered a significant change. Then you start recruiting players for the following season to catch Manchester City.

“It’s been a fantastic week, in my opinion. Beating Manchester City and winning on Sunday in such a manner.
