West Brom had been the better team in the first half, but England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made an outstanding save to save Mbaye Diagne’s second-minute header.
Diagne thought he had equalized in the 93rd minute when he controlled a pass and shot into the net, but he was disqualified for being barely offside, and the video assistant referee upheld the on-field decision.
Everton moves up to the fourth position in the Premier League table, the final Champions League qualification spot, with a victory in Thursday’s late game between Liverpool and Chelsea dropping them to fifth.
West Bromwich Albion is currently 19th in the Premier League, nine points behind 17th-placed Newcastle United, whom they host on Sunday.
