David Luiz set for Arsenal contract extension

Another extension at Arsenal is set to be given to David Luiz, as Mikel Arteta values his impact on a young team greatly.

The general strategy of the club has been to give players over the age of 30 one-year deals, so the new contract for the Brazilian runs out at the end of June. As he plays a key role in the side, Arteta wants the 33-year-old to sign on again.

Occasionally criticized for the defensive side of his playing, on Sunday, the attack by David Luiz proved especially significant against Leeds United. The physical way Marcelo Bielsa plays suggests that if they don’t have someone who can play through the press and carry the ball around, a backline can be vulnerable.

Luckily, this is what David Luiz excels at. It also brought the play of Arsenal on and made them more effective. The Brazilian was the author of one brilliant pass while the score was only 1-0, surging up the pitch, catching the ball from Bukayo Saka, and squaring for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to get a shot deflected over. It’s what he’s best at. In the right way, he breaks the lines.

A reversal of recent troubles also resulted from that stage of the game, and a reminder of some of the problems David Luiz can offer. It could be argued by the player and his manager that it is all poor luck.

Saka, under Liam Cooper’s challenge, went over in the box shortly after Aubameyang’s opening goal. The original penalty was reversed, but those on the side of the Arsenal thought it was similar to the passage of play that saw David Luiz firing off against Wolves in the loss that ended their recent winning streak.

The “should be a red card and a penalty” call! “Could be heard as the monitor was checked by Stuart Atwell. He reversed the decision ultimately.

Some close to the Brazilian would say that if it were David Luiz, that wouldn’t have happened, because there are just perceptions about him and his game.
