Chelsea striker Timo Werner has revealed that he has never had a goal drought as long as the 14 Premier League games he went without scoring from November to February.

In the 2019/20 Bundesliga season, the RB Leipzig forward scored 28 goals in 34 games, and after months of speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool, he signed a £53 million deal with Chelsea in the summer of 2020.

Werner scored four goals in his first eight Premier League appearances for the Blues. After his late strike against Sheffield United on 7 November, he did not score another Premier League goal until Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Newcastle on 15 February.

Werner told BBC Sport, “It was difficult for me because I wanted to support the team. It’s in my blood to score goals; I’m a striker. In my career, I’ve never had it [a long target drought]. You will still learn something new through adversity. I learned to believe in myself and to give my all on the field, rather than just thinking about goals and fighting for the team. Now I’m hoping that this phase is over and that I can score a few more goals before the end of the season.

Many talented strikers arrive in the Premier League and take a year to adjust and settle in. I believe my form is improving and getting better. Maybe this isn’t Timo’s year to score goals, but at the end of the year, I’ll focus on the season. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge. I’m very familiar with the teams we play against and how they operate.”
