Gabriel Martinelli demonstrated his talent this week by scoring an impressive center-forward goal during an Arsenal training session.
Martinelli had a breakout season in 2019-20, scoring 10 goals across all competitions and winning a new four-year contract at the Emirates.
However, the 19-year-old was then ruled out for six months after having surgery to patch a lesion of his knee cartilage.
Despite returning before Christmas, the young striker’s development has been poor. Martinelli was scheduled to start an FA Cup match against Newcastle in January, but he was forced to withdraw due to an ankle injury suffered during warm-ups.
Nonetheless, Arsenal remains optimistic that Martinelli will turn into a world-class striker. They are justified in their optimism based on his performance in training.
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown told BT Sport after his cameo against Olympiakos in the Europa League: “I think Martinelli again did particularly well when he came on. I don’t see him enough.”
Whether Mikel Arteta, who is watching, will feel obligated to allow the striker more minutes as the season comes to a close.
