In the 3-0 defeat of Milan, Antonio Conte felt Inter created an “extraordinary performance” picking out midfield duo Christian Eriksen and Ivan Perisic for special praise.
Thanks to a resounding victory in the derby on Sunday, Lautaro Martínez scoring in each half at San Siro, the Nerazzurri pushed four points clear at the top of Serie A.
Romelu Lukaku scored his season’s 17th league goal to complete the emphatic victory, becoming the first player to score for Inter since 1950 in four consecutive derbies.
It was a case of the best-laid plans coming to fruition for Conte, while they needed Captain Samir Handanovic to make a spectacular trio of saves early in the second half while the score was still 1-0.
“Compliments to our guys, who made an extraordinary performance,” said Conte.
A very well-prepared match that they perfectly followed, translating the conditions on the pitch that they encountered.
“There is satisfaction in seeing the growth of the group and I am happy because the guys deserve to reap the benefits of the work we are doing.”
In the previous transfer window, both Eriksen and Perisic, two players synonymous with going on, enjoyed pivotal positions for Inter.
Eriksen completed 90 percent of his attempted passes, making only his seventh league start of the season, and made nine crosses while playing in a central role.
Perisic, meanwhile, provided two assists, including a low cross from Inter’s left flank that helped Martínez not long after a heavy spell of Milan pressure to significantly double the advantage.
I assume a coach’s job is to try and bring all the elements of the squad to strengthen and enter into the football concept that we plan to create. The growth of Christian and Ivan, but of all our players, makes me proud.”
On Eriksen, who earlier in the season scored a dramatic winner against Milan in the Coppa Italia, the former Chelsea manager ad: “They make hasty judgments many times, as Christian did.”
“It takes a little time sometimes, particularly when you come from abroad. The same goes for Ivan, who this year has shown a great desire to challenge himself. He put himself at the full disposal of the cause and today he played an extraordinary match. He has incredible potential and must believe even more in himself.”
In all competitions, Inter handed Milan a fifth loss in 2021, which is two more than they had experienced during the previous year.
