Tottenham 4 – 0 Sheffield United: Bale’s Hat-Trick

After Chelsea defeated Fulham on Saturday, the onus was on Spurs to beat the relegated Blades and fuel their Champions League hopes. Particularly after seventh-place Liverpool’s game at Manchester United was postponed due to anti-Glazer protests by home fans.

Bale took the defeated EFL Cup finalists ahead in the first half. With a deft finish before bringing up his half-century in the tournament. With an emphatic strike following strong work from Son Heung-min. Son ended the rout with an outstanding curling effort. This happened after the Real Madrid loanee completed his hat-trick with a low shot from the outside of the box.

The visitors have now secured only one of their last 26 Premier League games in London. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has set a competition record of 27 straight away starts without a clean sheet.

After a quiet start, Son was denied by a fine Ramsdale save. Before Harry Kane fired low into the right-hand corner, only to be cleared by Chris Basham.

Sheffield United was just getting into the game when they were undone by a genius chipped pass from Serge Aurier that helped Bale to flick the ball left-footed over Ramsdale’s head.

As John Fleck hit Giovani Lo Celso in the face with his studs while the Spurs midfielder was on the ground early in the second half, he was arguably fortunate to avoid retribution.

Son believed he had doubled the lead after latching on to a clear Toby Alderweireld long pass and shooting a shot past Ramsdale, but the strike was ruled out for a fractional offside.

Bale did make it 2-0 after Son led the break from a Sheffield United post. He rifled a shot into the top-right corner for his 50th goal in England’s top flight. His second Premier League hat-trick came eight minutes later when he caught Ramsdale off guard with a crisp shot. Aurier set him up on the edge of the penalty area.

Son, who had earlier hit 10 league assists for the second season in a row, added gloss to the scoreline with a spectacular shot that went in off the right-hand post.

Can Spurs Still Snatch a Champions League Spot?

Spurs are still five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. With four games remaining, Spurs is ensuring they could still qualify for the Champions League.

Spurs’ odds of returning to Europe’s elite competition remain slim. West Ham and Liverpool already likely to leapfrog them if they win their games in hand.

Sheffield United, who are now bottom of the table with just 17 points, are desperate for the season end.
