La Liga Football Results – Real Sociedad Retain Their First Place

Athletic Bilbao salvaged a point when they ended up in a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad at the Anoeta stadium. So, last night saw, among other La Liga football results, Real Sociedad retain their first place in the Spanish league.

A 1-1 draw means Real Sociedad are now sitting comfortably on the first place surpassing Sevilla and two Madrid giants. The latter, however, have a game to spare to and still might overtake the Basques.

In front of a crowd of limited capacity, it was the visitors who came close to taking an early lead.

Inaki Williams took advantage of some poor defender, nodding the ball past Remiro who was well outside of the area. But Aritz Elustondo denied Williams’ charge toward goal with a phenomenal defensive challenge.

However, referees waved away the forward’s claims for a penalty as the Sociedad captain had intervened cleanly.

As is always the case for a derby, tackles were flying in and chances were few and far between. Alexander Isak was spearheading the visitors’ attacks, but Unai Simon still saved his two most dangerous strikes.

Despite an early opportunity for the visitors through Raul Garcia, the hosting team took the lead first. Alexander Isak converted a penalty in the 58th minute.

Imanol Alguacil’s men had to weather a storm after taking the lead. That is because both Martinez and Alex Berenguer were testing Remiro from close-range headers.

Despite Martinez seeing red for a second offence, Bilbao struck the home crowd to silence. Iker Muniain’s free-kick should’ve been saved comfortably, but the Spanish goalie inexplicably decided to punch it clear. Tragically, however, he ended up directing the ball into his own net.

Real Sociedad – Athletic Bilbao 1:1

Getafe – Espanyol 2:1
