Juan Carlos Unzue has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease

Previous Barcelona assistant coach Juan Carlos Unzue has announced that motor neuron disease (MND) has been diagnosed.

Unzue revealed on Thursday that he was diagnosed in February with the rare neurological condition amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS), the kind of MND that has endured most.

There is no known solution for ALS which causes the death of voluntary muscle control neurons. Unzue said that he wants to increase awareness and research support.

“I maintain that I adapt well, I feel fortunate to have driven the existence I have and now I feel honored about what I can do about ALS, which is a disease that everybody can get. Together with the Luzon Foundation, I will attempt to help improve the quality of life. We want to assemble a lot of rivalries or activities that will enable us to raise cash for research. Ideally, we will discover an answer not long from now,” Unzue told a Camp Nou newsgathering.

During his playing days, Unzue spoke to Barca and Sevilla as a goalkeeper and was assistant to Luis Enrique at Camp Nou from 2014-17. He helped the team to win three Copa del Rey trophies, the Champions League, and two La Liga titles, .

Luis Enrique, presently the manager of Spain, was among those present on Thursday, along with Barca’s leader Josep Maria Bartomeu and a portion of the main team squad.

Unzue said, “Individuals are capable of adjusting to life. I have met other disabled individuals who, given the challenges, are quick to keep living, because life is justified, despite all the trouble.”

After leaving Barca, Unzue spent a season as Celta Vigo’s head coach, where he had recently worked under Enrique and was in charge of Girona most as of late.

Barcelona has demonstrated its help on Twitter for its previous player and assistant manager, stating: “Juan Carlos, you have all our help and solidarity. Stay solid, coach!”
