Gary Neville: There is no way back for Cristiano Ronaldo

Gary Neville believes there is no way back for Cristiano Ronaldo after his criticism of the club and head coach Erik ten Hag. Ronaldo asked to quit the club in the summer after rejoining United in August 2021 and finishing as their top scorer in all competitions the previous season with 24 goals. However, he chose to stay at Old Trafford ahead of the 2022–23 season and expressed to Morgan his feeling of being “betrayed” by United for trying to get rid of him this term.

“No, and I don’t believe he wants to find a way home. If he wanted a way out, he wouldn’t have agreed to this interview. He was aware that it would make headlines and mark the end of his Manchester United career,” Gary Neville said about Cristiano Ronaldo. “Since Man United are aware that they must terminate Cristiano’s contract or set a precedent that will allow any player to criticize them in the future, I’m curious as to what they are doing. I agree with some of what Cristiano has said, and many Man Utd supporters will also agree with much of what Cristiano has said, but the truth is that if you work for a company and say those things, your employment must end, and Man Utd must do that soon.”

“Erik ten Hag, in my opinion, has handled his extremely challenging first six months at United perfectly. He couldn’t have done anything differently, in my opinion,” he added. “Cristiano Ronaldo is an enormously talented footballer with a monster-like personality. He has been in a challenging situation since, if he openly challenges him, he is unlikely to prevail. He frequently excludes Ronaldo, and we are aware of this in secret. However, a few weeks ago, Ronaldo, Ten Hag, the executives, sporting directors, and owners ought to have met.”
