Football Scores: Spain 7-0 Costa Rica

Ferran Torres scored a brace to help Spain produce one of the high-scoring football scores of the midweek action in the World Cup. The first two goals were scored by Dani Olmo (11) and Marco Asensio (21), and the third was added by former Manchester City forward Ferran Torres from the penalty spot (31) before he scored his second goal of the night just after halftime with a low finish (54). With a beautiful volleyed strike from Alvaro Morata’s pass for the fifth goal, Barcelona midfielder Gavi, who at 18 years and 110 days old was the youngest player to represent Spain at a World Cup, became the competition’s youngest goal scorer since Pele in 1958. (74). Morata (90+2) and Carlos Soler (90), the substitutes, still had time to participate.

Spain dominated the game to the point where they might have already been ahead when Olmo scored the game’s opening goal in the 11th minute. The RB Leipzig forward finished deftly over Keylor Navas after receiving a pass from Gavi and before flashing a low shot narrowly wide. Spain did not enter the match with a designated striker, but Asensio of Real Madrid, who was acting as a false nine, quickly extended their lead after Jordi Alba’s low pick-out. After Spain’s early dominance left Costa Rica shell-shocked, the game’s pattern remained consistent, with Torres scoring from the penalty spot after Oscar Duarte had brought down Alba.

Spain made a number of substitutions after scoring their fourth goal, with Torres and the excellent Pedri being replaced with Sunday’s match against Germany in mind. However, their domination remained unchallenged. Spain didn’t have to wait long for their fifth goal, with Gavi finishing yet another magnificent individual effort with a beautiful strike. Morata had already sprung the Costa Rican offside trap. The former Chelsea striker ultimately scored his own goal after a deft one-two with Olmo and a Morata cross, beating the helpless Navas with a left-footed finish. Prior to the score, Paris Saint-Soler Germain’s tacked on the sixth by seizing a loose ball.
