Football Scores: Liverpool 3-1 Southampton

Darwin Nunez scored a brace to help Liverpool produce one of the most comfortable football scores of the weekend in the Premier League. Both clubs scored free-kick goals in the first nine minutes of a frenzied first half. Andy Robertson’s free-kick was initially flicked in by Roberto Firmino at the near post, and then Che Adams repeated the action from James Ward-delivery Prowse’s at the other end. While the hosts missed a number of opportunities after halftime and needed goalkeeper Alisson Becker to perform heroics at the other end, Liverpool moved through the gears before halftime as Nunez finished two excellent moves with first-time shots. This goal proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Liverpool scored on their opening assault, demonstrating to Jones the hard and clinical reality of playing in the elite division of football. Firmino was sprinting across the front post as Robertson’s deep free kick from the right found him. The Brazilian attempted to score by flicking the ball to the far post, where it bounced past the helpless Gavin Bazunu and into the net. Firmino had the ideal retort after being left out of Brazil’s World Cup roster, and Southampton’s equalizer came from a different player who had been overlooked for the Qatar tournament, this time from an England perspective.

In order to deliver his own free-kick delivery into the head of Adams, Ward-Prowse put his rejection from Gareth Southgate behind him. Adams eluded Virgil van Dijk’s marking before driving home past Alisson, who came but failed to grasp the set piece. Nunez had managed to escape the Southampton goalie when Harvey Elliott flicked the ball to the back post, giving the Uruguayan the easy chore of pushing beyond the keeper. However, the majority of the goalmouth activity in the second half occurred in the Liverpool area, and Alisson made three outstanding reaction saves to keep the score low. At the near post, Samuel Edozie and Mohamed Elyounoussi both received quick shots from the Brazil goalkeeper, who then twice quickly denied them before stopping Adams’ close-range header.
