Pascal Gross scored a late winner to help Brighton produce one of the high-scoring football results of the weekend in the Premier League. Adam Lallana gave Brighton an early lead, but Goncalo Guedes quickly tied the score, then Wolves genuinely took the lead when Lewis Dunk was fouled and Ruben Neves converted a penalty. But late in the first half, Kaoru Mitoma was the key player. Mitoma’s headed equalizer was soon followed by Nelson Semedo getting dismissed for tripping Mitoma. After unveiling Julen Lopetegui as their new manager before the game, the Wolves put up a valiant fight in the second half, but Gross eventually broke down their defense. With the three points, Roberto De Zerbi’s group surpasses Graham Potter’s Chelsea and climbs into the top six.
Brighton went into the game with a positive attitude after embarrassing Chelsea the last time, and it showed in the assurance of their performance. Leandro Trossard’s pass for Lallana’s goal past Jose Sa allowed them to rip apart Wolves in the first half. As a result, Wolves may have stumbled, but they swiftly equalized when Guedes carried the ball all the way and defeated Robert Sanchez with a determined run from the right. It was his first goal for the group after joining Valencia in the summer.
Despite appearing to be somewhat unorganized, the Wolves were found to have engaged in a handball offense by Lewis Dunk. A less capable team would have been shocked at how far behind they had fallen so rapidly. Instead, Brighton persevered in outperforming its opponents, as Mitoma outjumped Semedo late in the first half to equalize the score after a superb effort by the tenacious Lallana. The Seagulls had to be patient during the second half as the Wolves defended staunchly while posing a breakaway danger thanks to substitute Adama Traore, who forced a brilliant save from Sanchez. Gross, though, won the competition with a great net result.
