Football Results: Sheffield United 0-1 Rotherham

Ben Wiles scored the only goal of the game to help Rotherham produce one of the narrow football results of the weekend in the Championship. The Millers have had a terrible record at Bramall Lane since their last victory there 42 years ago, but they changed the record books with a 1-0 triumph thanks to Wiles’ skillful finish despite being without six first-team players due to injuries. They felt unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty right before halftime, and there could have been some dread about what would happen in the second half, but they held off a United comeback to secure their first victory in five games.

When Cohen Bramall gave up on a losing cause and threw in a cross that Peter Kioso intercepted before Wes Foderingham could stop it, it was the visitors who presented the initial threat. Lee Peltier stopped an attempt from Oli McBurnie, who also headed over, as the Blades started to gain control and force a couple of half-chances. However, Rotherham continued to play and eventually seized the lead in the 38th minute. Wiles missed from the edge of the box before a major drama deep into first-half injury time as the Millers gained confidence and improved at the end of the first half.

With manager Matt Taylor encroaching on the field and the players encircling Stroud at halftime, Rotherham was incensed. After the half, the home team came out strong and nearly equalized right away when John Egan got space at the far post and sent a shot that Viktor Johansson did a good job of tipping over. In the final 30 minutes, the Blades’ comeback really got going. In the 68th minute, Robinson launched a long ball, and McBurnie glanced a header at it, but Johansson was able to grab the ball on the second try.
