Football Results: Coventry 2-0 Wigan

Coventry secured their third win in a row as they produced one of the comprehensive football results of the weekend in the Championship. With two games remaining before hosting sixth-placed QPR on Saturday, Coventry’s sixth win in eight matches propelled them into the top half of the Championship for the first time this year. They are now just five points out of the playoffs. With their sixth loss in seven games, Wigan squandered the chance to climb out of the bottom two and remain two points from safety.

Kasey Palmer came closest in a game devoid of opportunities when Callum O’Hare diverted Jake Bidwell’s pass into the midfielder’s path just before halftime. The former Chelsea academy product turned past Curtis Tilt, but Rarmani Edwards-Green intercepted his attempt. Despite having 62 percent of the possession in the first half, the Sky Blues were unable to register a shot on goal. In addition, the visitors were unable to cause any problems for Ben Wilson in the Coventry goal. James McClean’s attempt to divert Jack Whatmough’s header back across the goal was unsuccessful.

Within the first ten minutes, the Irish winger also saw a shot deflected, while Charlie Wyke headed a corner for Leam Richardson’s team just wide. For Mark Robins’ team, Josh Eccles and Hamer also missed the target before Michael Rose, following a deft corner routine, floated O’Hare’s cutback into the empty stand behind the goal.

When Hamer forced Wilson to sprint across the goal and clear his errant back pass to avert an ugly own goal, the Latics nearly took the lead. Thirteen minutes from the end, the midfielder latching onto Gyokeres’ lay-off snapped the tie at the other end. The 25-year-old launched a shot from outside the box, but it deflected off Whatmough and hit Jamie Jones in the Wigan goal, leaving him helpless.
