Zinedine Zidane in the stands as Rayo Vallecano lose Segunda play off final first leg

Football News

In Vallecas, Zinedine Zidane was spotted in the audience as Rayo Vallecano fell 2-1 to Girona in the first leg of their Segunda Division play-off final.

On a high-stakes night in the Spanish capital, the former Real Madrid manager was there to witness his son Luca, who was in goal for the home team.

Rayo defeated Leganes in the semi-finals to meet the Catalans, despite placing sixth in the Segunda division after 2020/21.

The positive mood continued at the Estadio de Vallecas in the early minutes, with Isi Palazon putting the hosts ahead.

Enric Franquesa comfortably tucked home Mamadou Sylla’s ball to equalize right before the interval, and the visitors began to get into the stalemate.

Just seconds after the restart, Sylla transformed from supplier to match-winner by burying Yan Couto’s cross.

With a 2-1 away goals advantage ahead of the second leg next weekend at the Estadi Montilivi, Girona is in pole position to ensure a La Liga return in 2021.

The Frenchman has left the Bernabeu for the second time as the team finishes the season without a title.

And the iconic figure stepped down in a storm, releasing an astounding letter just days after his departure.

Zidane wrote, “I am not abandoning ship and I am not tired of coaching.” “I’m leaving because I believe the club no longer trusts me and doesn’t provide me with the support I need to establish something in the medium and long term. I would have preferred my connection with the club and the president to be a little different from that of other managers over the previous few months.”
