After scoring the opening goal and creating two others, Karim Benzema was described as “phenomenal” as Real Madrid won 3-1 at Eibar on Sunday to move level on points with city rivals Atletico at the top of La Liga.
Within the first 13 minutes in the Basque Country, Benzema and Luka Modric scored to bring Zinedine Zidane’s men on their way to a fourth straight league victory, with Lucas Vazquez scoring a late third after Garcia Kike pulled Eibar one back.
“He’s very decisive. What he’s doing is fantastic,’ Real Coach Zinedine Zidane said, praising French compatriot Benzema.
“Not just in terms of targets. On Karim, I repeat myself, but he doesn’t just score goals. Karim must bring clear-sightedness to our game.
“It is even better when he scores, but beyond that, he is very important to us.”
Real sit on goal difference behind Atletico, but have the better head-to-head record, which is how at the end of the season, level teams are divided.
After Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Elche, Diego Simeone’s Atletico has two games in hand, however.
After their 2-2 draw, this weekend with Valencia, fifth-placed Barcelona is eight points adrift of the Madrid pair.
