After helping Real Madrid past Athletic in La Liga on Tuesday, Zinedine Zidane hailed Karim Benzema as the best French striker ever.
As Madrid defeated Athletic 3-1, Benzema scored a late brace, putting them level on points with Real Sociedad and Atletico atop the table.
In all competitions this season, the Frenchman brought his tally to 10 goals – more than any other La Liga player.
After the game, Zidane was asked whether Benzema had ever been the best French striker and answered: “For me, yes, he’s been at Real Madrid for a long time in addition to what he does, what he shows.”
More than 500 matches, all the targets, his record. What he did stands up for himself. It is very clear to me that he is the best.
After an incident involving his then-national team-mate Mathieu Valbuena, Benzema became a Real Madrid legend but has not played for the French national team since 2015.
Still, in addition to scoring more than 250 goals during his tenure at Real Madrid, the 32-year-old netted 27 goals in 81 caps for Les Bleus.
He is now a player who is more complete than he used to be. He’s not pure No.9, he’s not just thinking about scoring goals, and that’s what I love about him,’ added Zidane, himself a legend of the French national team.
He likes to mix and build opportunities for his team-mates, but he still knows how to score goals and he does that when the team needs him the most as he did today. What Karim is all about is that.
