Match Review

Timo Werner scored a crucial goal in the first half to pull Chelsea three points clear of West Ham in the race for the Top Four. This was Werner’s first goal since mid-February. The summer signing from RB Leipzig has endured a difficult first season in the Premier League.

Werner’s winner came just before halftime after Ben Chilwell crossed it low from the left flank. This was just what the game needed and sparked into life in the second half. Werner missed a sitter at the start of the second half after collecting a rebound. West Ham was reduced to 10 men with Fabian Balbuena being sent off. The defender was sent off after referee Chris Kavanagh consulted the pitchside monitor. He then issued a red card for what seemed like an unavoidable action from the defender. West Ham, Chelsea, and Liverpool are fighting for one spot in the Top Four.

Manager Reaction

David Moyes :

“I think it’s a decision made by somebody who’s never played the game. I don’t know where Fabi Balbuena is supposed to plant his foot.” Moyes said when asked about Balbuena’s sending off. “If they do think that, you’ll look at the one a few minutes later, with Coufal and Rudiger, a similar challenge, but they never did anything about it.”

Thomas Tuchel :

“The boys are very, very happy in the dressing room, and they can be. Great performance and amazing result, I think a well-deserved win for us.” Tuchel said. “Very tough to play [at West Ham], you can win ball possession, but you have to earn your chances and be very, very smart. You cannot afford to do easy mistakes and you have to be patient.”
