Man City’s Angelino all set to join RB Leipzig

Transfer News

Manchester City defender Angelino is expected to complete a permanent transfer on a four-and-a-half-year contract to RB Leipzig after the club activated a buying obligation of EUR 18 million (£ 16m/$ 21m).

On a season-long loan in September, the Spaniard joined the Bundesliga club with an appearance-based obligation-to-purchase clause.

Throughout the season, Angelino had to appear in 12 matches, with five in the second half of the campaign, and he passed that number on Friday night when the Bundesliga clash against Augsburg began.

As a 16-year old from Deportivo La Coruna, Angelino first joined City and was impressed as he made his way through the academy ranks.

But the left-back, following loan spells with New York City FC, Girona, and Mallorca, joined PSV on a permanent transfer in 2018.

After starring for the Dutch side, City exercised a buyback option, but he made only six appearances under Pep Guardiola before joining Leipzig on loan last January and again at the beginning of this season.

“Angelino said in November, “I have the thorn of why I didn’t play more or I didn’t quite fit in [at City]. But that helped me get here, meet the coach, the party, and reach the semis in the Champions League.

“I’m here for [head coach Julian] Nagelsmann if I’m honest. I signed for him again. I was pleased with him, with the way he played, with everything, with everything he communicated, with the techniques that suited me perfectly. He is the reason why I am here. The relationship with colleagues is really strong as well.

“Something came out of interest [from Barcelona], but Leipzig pulled a lot for me to come back and in my head, I wanted to be calm and continue enjoying football like I was doing in recent months and stay there.”

Owing to the way the 24-year-old became such a crucial part of Nagelsman’s plans, Angelino’s transfer to Leipzig was always going to go through.

The 24-year-old has started all but one of the 21 Bundesliga matches in Leipzig as well as all of their group-stage Champions League games.
