Since the start of the 2017 season, the 23-year-old academy product has made over 100 appearances for Reading in all competitions, with 41 of those coming in the Sky Bet Championship this season. However, the left-back has chosen to make a fresh start in Germany. He plans to sign a contract with Bayern Munich that runs until 2025. The left back has been given the number three shirt originally worn by Xabi Alonso.
Richards, who made his single appearance for England Under-21s as a substitute in a 2-2 draw in Slovenia in October 2019, stated, “My move to FC Bayern is a wonderful honor for me. It’s a dream come true. I’m honored to wear the shirt of one of the world’s most prestigious clubs. I hope I can continue to contribute to the team’s success in the future. I’d want to express my gratitude to FC Bayern’s management for their faith in me. Our discussions were compelling. I’m looking forward to playing for Bayern.”
Reading claims to have offered Richards a new contract, but he has chosen to join the six-time European Cup winners. His current contract expires next month.
