Gus Poyet claims that the availability of Thomas Tuchel turned his head on Chelsea, but not necessarily to support Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. As a German coach, Thomas Tuchel was a key factor in him being quickly picked as Frank Lampard’s replacement at Chelsea, according to former Stamford Bridge favorite Gus Poyet.
However, Poyet believes that a wider trend is at stake, considering the popularity of a high-pressing style popularized in recent seasons by the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Ralph Hassenhuttl, and Hansi Flick.
“I think, with all respect to Tuchel, it plays a very, very important role that he is German,” Poyet told Stats Perform News.
“It wouldn’t matter if he wasn’t German because he was coming out of Paris Saint-Germain. I think there was a major impact from the German side. We need to wait to see you [now]. There’s a fascinating partnership with [Chelsea’s former PSG captain] Thiago Silva. They know each other from the past, and we’ll see the rest.”
