Top-four finish for Liverpool is almost impossible, Says Klopp

Football News

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has confirmed that finishing in the top four is “absolutely unlikely.” The victory over Wolves on Monday brought his squad within five points of fourth-placed Chelsea, but the manager admits they face an uphill challenge.

“I want to be hopeful, but it is almost difficult in the league to qualify for the Champions League places that we have,” Klopp told the German newspaper Bild.

Gareth Bale is back in action for Tottenham, who are also in contention. Also, [Manchester] City and [Manchester] United are further apart. Chelsea is a rising star. We know that qualifying for the Champions League via the league would be difficult.”

Liverpool is in the Champions League quarter-finals, but Klopp added: “You don’t normally win the Champions League itself in a year with injury worries as high as we have.” Then, in the worst-case situation, it will be next year: no Champions League, likely no Europa League, though none is guaranteed.”

Following a year marred by the coronavirus pandemic, failing to return to Europe’s top club competition next season will result in a substantial drop in sales. Klopp is aware of this, but he is not worried about his work if Liverpool fails to qualify. If they still struggle to qualify for the Europa League, which is still a possibility, he thinks it will improve his squad for a repeat of the championship they won last summer.

In terms of a lack of Champions League football, he said, “That would mean a massive financial loss.” “Otherwise, not much. I am sure that in virtually every football club around the world, I will be asked in a case like ours.

“This is natural, reality, industry. That is something I would gladly consider. Still, things are different in Liverpool. Nobody here, not our owners, not the sports director, not even the players, has any questions. We have acknowledged the situation and are fighting our way through it.
