Solskjær need more goals from their forwards

Football News

Ole Gunnar Solskjær thinks that the 19 Premier League goals scored by his forwards Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Edinson Cavani, and Mason Greenwood are too poor, but if this can be changed, Manchester United will have an extra edge for the season’s closing period.

With 14, midfielder Bruno Fernandes is the top scorer in the league, followed by Rashford’s eight. But the manager was confident as he noted that before Manchester City’s game in hand at Everton on Wednesday, United’s 50 targets led the division by four.

Solskjær said, “We are the team that has scored the most in the league and you are right that our center-forwards or forwards have not scored as much as we would like to,” “But that’s a major plus for me. We’re in the final stretch of the season now; if we can make them shoot again, that’s going to give us another advantage in the games.

We work hard and they have class and consistency. And that means that we’ve had goals and positions from other areas, which is a change from last season. If we can marry these two bits together plus defend a little better, then this season we can be successful.

Greenwood signed a new deal for the year 2025 on Tuesday. “He has one league goal and a total of four this season after scoring 17 goals last season, a joint-record for a United teenager, “I’m working hard with all the coaches, so hopefully I’ll be back there [to last season’s form] soon,” Greenwood said.

The 19-year-old primarily plays on the right, but Solskjær said: “Mason can play No 10 as well as a shadow striker, he can play center-forward and perhaps on the left at a stretch.”

United travel to Turin to play Real Sociedad in the last-32 opening leg of Thursday’s Europa League due to Spain’s Covid restrictions. “Probably the hardest one you could choose from our unseeded group was when the draw was made,” Solskjær said.
