Sheffield United confirm Chris Wilder club exit

Football News

Sheffield United revealed last night that Chris Wilder had left Bramall Lane by mutual consent, with Jason Tindall and Paul Heckingbottom expected to form an interim management team.

Tindall, who has been without a job since Bournemouth dismissed him six weeks ago, is in negotiations with Bramall Lane officials to work alongside Heckingbottom before the end of the season.

Former Leeds, Hibernian, and Barnsley manager Heckingbottom is set to lead the Under 23s to Leicester on Sunday.

Other candidates for Wilder’s permanent replacement include Lincoln’s Michael Appleton and Eddie Howe, Tindall’s former boss at Bournemouth.

Wilder’s departure was confirmed on Saturday night, 36 hours after it had been speculated that his five-year reign at Bramall Lane was coming to an end.

‘Being manager of Sheffield United has been a special journey and one I’ll never forget,’ he said in a statement released by the club.

‘I was ecstatic to be offered the chance in 2016, and I’ve been ecstatic with the results, which include two promotions and the club’s best-ever Premier League finish.’

Since taking over from Nigel Adkins, Wilder had overseen a remarkable transformation of the Blades, leading them to the League One title in his first season.

They were promoted from the Championship two years later, and despite being widely predicted to return to the Championship the following season, they led the Yorkshire club to a splendid ninth-place finish.

‘Today is a sad day for everyone at this wonderful football club,’ United striker Oli McBurnie wrote on Twitter. Gaffer, thank you very much for everything you did for me and my family; I’ll never forget it. We had a lot of fun together both on and off the field. We’re sorry if we disappointed you in the end.’

Wilder has resigned, however, as the club has fallen to the bottom of the Premier League and conflicts with the Bramall Lane hierarchy have made his place untenable.
