The Premier League champions’ chairman has stated that they will send a strong message to their opponents during the transfer window. Sergio Aguero replacement is a priority for Manchester City, says Al Mubarak.
Just days after missing out on the Champions League, Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has threatened his opponents that they will become even stronger in their quest for the European championship.
Pep Guardiola’s squad won the Premier League and the Carabao Cup this season. As well as reaching the Champions League final for the first time in the club’s history.
The season ended in sadness, though, with a 1-0 loss to Chelsea. Al Mubarak believes now is the time to prove they can go to the next level.
“One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that you always need to bring in new people to renew the team, especially when you’re at the top,” Al Mubarak added.
“After winning the league, this is not the time to relax and enjoy yourself. That would be the biggest blunder you’ve ever made. This is the time to send a strong statement that you are not happy with merely winning the league.”
Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia, both will be out of contract at the end of the season. They are on their way to Barcelona and have already left City.
Even though they were successful without a striker for much of the season, Al Mubarak stated that it is one of the areas they would bolster in the summer.
The chairman did not name any players. Tottenham’s Harry Kane is a striker who is said to be of interest to the club.
Al Mubarak also affirmed the addition of fresh faces, emphasizing the importance of quality above number.
“We have lost a very significant legend in Sergio Aguero, and [those] are extremely difficult shoes to fill, but I am convinced we will find the perfect person to replace those shoes,” he stated.
“Of course, there are other areas within the squad that require attention, but there aren’t many. It’s not about the quantity; it’s about the quality. We have a fantastic roster; you don’t win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final unless you have a fantastic group. We do have a fantastic group. In a few of critical spots, we’ll bring in some quality.”
