Roy Keane likened Phil Foden to American football legend Tom Brady after his performance against Andorra in their 5-0 demolition. The Manchester City midfielder did not get on the scoresheet but was by far the best player on the pitch. He played in the center of the park and was spraying passes all over the pitch. His highlight was an inch-perfect pass to Bukayo Saka for the second goal. Gareth Southgate sang the praises for the youngster.
“I love my American Football and Foden has been like a top quarterback,” Roy Keane said about Phil Foden. “He’s been like Tom Brady. He’s just picking people out. He’s got runners and he’s got wide-receivers. He’s making it look so easy. He’s been maturing well over the last year and he’s been playing most weeks for Man City. He’s playing in big games most weeks and in the top competition in Europe.”
“It is difficult (to predict his best position) because frankly, he is one of those players who are effective anywhere across that front line.” England boss Gareth Southgate said. “He occasionally plays there for his club but more often than not it is from wide or he is the false nine so it is an interesting experiment for us as we move forward with the balance of our midfield and the different types of players, depending on the opposition as well. If you play him seven, 11, 10, eight. A sort of traditional 4-3-3 midfield with a six, eight, 10, if he was the 10 within that but with the capability to drop lower and build the play at times like he did tonight.”
