Zidane’s departure comes after a disappointing season in which the club finished second to rivals Atlético Madrid in a title race that went down to the wire. Real Madrid was also eliminated from the Champions League in the semi-finals by Chelsea, marking the first time in 11 seasons that they have failed to win a title.
Off the field, Real Madrid was a key figure in the failed Super League breakaway, with club president Florentino Pérez defending the plan and engaging in a verbal battle with Uefa that shows no signs of abating.

Zidane will go immediately and will not be in charge next season, says Fabrizio Romano. Zinedine Zidane informed the players and staff of his decision during a chat with Florentino Perez. An official statement is expected shortly. He previously served as the club’s manager from 2016 to 2018, before returning for the 2019-2021 season.
The news comes at the end of a season in which Real has failed to win any trophies.
Atletico Madrid pipped them to the league title. They were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea in the semi-finals.
In March 2019, Zidane replaced Santiago Solari at Real Madrid. In the Covid-affected 2019-20 season, he won his second La Liga title. Zidane won three Champions League championships and the 2016-17 Spanish league during his first spell with the club. It lasted from January 2016 to May 2018.
The Frenchman has informed his players and coaching staff of his intentions to leave. He plans to tell Perez of his decision within the next few hours. Zidane’s future at Real Madrid is yet to be officially announced.
