Real Madrid President Candidates

Real Madrid has announced that club president Florentino Perez has released a call. The call is for candidates for the club’s forthcoming leadership election. The current supremo is the only nominee.

Los Blancos have declared that the process that will lead to elections for the next four-year term – which will extend from mid-2021 to mid-2025 – has now formally started. The club looks to ensure that they do not end the new campaign empty-handed. Perez, whose two separate terms as Madrid’s 15th and 18th president make him the second-longest serving person in the post after Santiago Bernabeu, is expected to be re-elected unless another contender emerges.

Perez is the only one who has applied since the window for prospective applicants opened a week ago.

Anyone wishing to run against the strong Perez has until Monday to do so.

The Club Statement:

“Following board meeting and in line with article 38, section b of the Real Madrid social laws, the President has asked that the electoral board issue the call for elections for the President and board of directors,” the club said in a statement.

In layman’s words, this means Perez has ordered the official launch of campaigns for both his seat and those on the board of La Liga’s reigning champions.

There is no fixed date for these elections. They are expected to take place near the middle of the year, between the 2020-21 and 2021-22 campaigns.

The 74-year-old, who is the CEO of the big building firm ACS, has been President of Madrid since 2009. He has been re-elected unopposed twice, in 2013 and 2017. He was also the driving force behind Real Madrid’s star-studded ‘Galacticos’ era. This was during the first stint in charge from 2000 to 2006.
