Raúl García lost none of his appetite for the game

After signing a new Athletic Club contract extension, forward Raúl García admitted that he had lost none of his appetite for the match.

The 34-year-old put a pen to paper on a new contract that kept him in Bilbao until at least June 2022, although the agreement also includes an option for a further year.

We all wanted the same thing,” Raúl García said at a press conference on Wednesday morning about the negotiations.” This contract means staying at a club that gets who I am and my way of operating as an individual, and that is the greatest compliment.

In the confidence that I can contribute and that I will do everything in my power to help, I feel that the Club is confident and comfortable.

“I’m relaxed and I’m just focusing on everyday life, which is what will help me to keep going.”

The forward put down his longevity and unwaning enthusiasm to approach every day as something new for his job.

“I get up and come to work every day as if it was my first,” Raúl said.

“Every day feels like a new day for me, like a new experience, which is what keeps me hooked on my career.

If one thing I feel here is that I can look in the face of someone and be honest with them.

I’m practically occupied 24 hours a day by anyone who knows me knows my job. Since I think it’s important and I like it, I devote everything I can to it.”

Having made almost 700 professional appearances in total -238 of them in the Athletic jersey- Raúl García is one of the most active players currently playing in LaLiga and he wants to finish his career as high as possible in the list.

The forward added, “Everyone poses challenges themselves, I love to do it. The harder it is, the easier. It motivates you to be on the list of players with the most games in LaLiga.

Hopefully, I will be able to keep going the way I am at the moment for the next two years. We are blessed to have great clinicians on our side who allow us to be as physically fit as possible.

I feel perfect, and for as long as I can, I want to enjoy myself and play.”

When asked about the transition Athletic is going through and the introduction of young lions, No.22 said he was “pleased” that young people were coming in and helping the squad on and off the pitch.

“Being good enough to play is the most important thing, but those of us inside know the importance of knowing how to help.

There are times where you’re not playing and you always have to be there to support others.

I am delighted that young individuals are coming through and that they are becoming more competitive.”
