Gareth Southgate revealed he is happy that people are questioning the fight of Raheem Sterling as he proves his critics wrong at Euro 2020. The Manchester City winger has been in scorching form in the tournament. He has scored in every match at Euro 2020 apart from the goalless draw against Scotland. His third goal of the tournament gave England a crucial lead against Germany at Wembley. He scored the winners against Croatia and Czech Republic on the group stage to help them top the group.
Sterling has scored 15 goals in England’s last 20 matches. This was after just scoring two goals in his first 45 appearances. Despite his goal scoring form, his place in the side was allegedly under threat. Reports that Phil Foden and Jack Grealish could replace the winger were doing the rounds. Gareth Southgate revealed he always had the faith in Raheem Sterling and was full of praise for the winger.
“He is a fighter,” Southgate said. “He has got an incredible resilience and hunger. He has developed over the last couple of years this real hunger to score, even in the games where the opportunities where the ball has flashed across the box earlier in the tournament, he has been in between the posts.”
“To deliver them at Wembley will have been really special for him and, as you said, the goals return is incredible,” he added. “He is finding himself in these areas and yes, his drive is fantastic, we know the journey he has been on with England and I am so happy for him to be able to deliver the performances he has. Absolutely incredible, really, but yes, please keep asking the questions because if we cannot motivate him everyone else will certainly be able to!”
