After the attacker’s hat-trick in Manchester City’s 5-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion, Pep Guardiola lauded Raheem Sterling’s progress.
This season, Sterling’s treble saw him move to 27 goals, the most he has scored in a single campaign.
With Gabriel Jesus and Bernardo Silva also on the scoresheet in the convincing victory on Saturday, Guardiola paid tribute to the England international.
“All credit to [Sterling]. Not just for the three goals, it’s important for what we have ahead of us. His growth as a player is because he wants to improve and his success is so pleasing to us.
Raheem himself knows exactly what he needs to do. He’s a big competitor, he likes to score goals, he’s self-confident, violent.
We have wingers with the mentality to score goals which are so important.”
With three games left, City’s win saw them mathematically secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.
They will, however, have to wait until Monday to hear if their appeal against a two-year European ban has been successful before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Guardiola said that he was “very” optimistic that City would succeed while adding that they had shown that they deserved their Champions League spot.
It’s the decision of [CAS], so it’s so significant. Of course, it is. We’ve done what we’ve done, won our pitch qualification. No one can doubt this, “It’s the [CAS] decision, so it’s so important. Of course, it is. We have done what we have done, won our qualification on the pitch. No one can doubt this. We’ve done what we’ve done, won our pitch qualification.”
It’s been an excellent Liverpool season and congratulations to them for winning the Premier League again.
“In general, the level that we played at today has been quite similar for the whole season and now we’re going to wait for Monday for the decision that will be taken.”
