Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of the Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma. He joins the club on a five-year deal after his contract at AC Milan ran out. Milan could not agree on terms with the player. The French club beat competition from Barcelona over his signature who will earn £10.3m per year.
“I am delighted to be part of this huge club,” Gianluigi Donnarumma told the Paris Saint-Germain club website. “I feel ready to take on this new challenge and continue to grow here. With Paris, I want to win as much as possible and to bring joy to the supporters.”
Donnarumma helped Itay to their first title in 15 years. He was awarded the Player of the Tournament award after Italy beat Spain and England in a penalty shootout in the semis and finals respectively. He was a key part of the Italian defensive wall that did not concede in the group stage. The goalkeeper underwent his medical when he was granted permission to visit a hospital in Rome during Euro 2020.
Donnarumma has made 251 appearances for AC Milan, keeping 88 clean sheets in the process. He was promoted to the senior team from the youth at the age of 16. Last season he helped Milan to the Champions League position for the first time in seven years.
“Some choices are difficult, but they are part of a man’s growth,” he wrote on Instagram. “The time has come to say goodbye, a choice that was not easy, indeed, and certainly a post is not enough to explain it, or perhaps it cannot even be explained because the deepest feelings can hardly be translated into words. What I can say is that sometimes it is right to choose to change, to face difficult challenges, to grow, to complete yourself.”
