Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries scored a goal in each half to help the Netherlands to a 2-0 victory against Austria. They topped their group in the process with a game in hand. Austria will take on Ukraine in their second match to determine who joins the Netherlands from Group C at Euro 2020.
VAR awarded the Netherlands a penalty after David Alaba brought down Denzel Dumfries in the box. Depay stepped up to slot the penalty home. Dumfries then doubled the lead himself with a close-range finish when David Malen broke the offside trap of the visitors. The dutch have joined Italy and Belgium in the knockout stage of Euro 2020.

Netherlands coach Frank de Boer: “I think there are still a lot of things we can improve and we showed some different qualities today.” the Netherlands coach said after the victory against Austria. “Defensively we were much better than against Ukraine. On the ball, we could have done better today but overall it was a really decent performance today and that’s given me a lot of confidence for the next games.”
Austria coach Franco Foda: “We wanted to achieve more but we played against a top team which is very compact, with extraordinary strikers. We tried everything over the 90 minutes to turn the match around.” he added. “The decisive factor was that in ball possession we gave away too many balls too easily and invited them to go on the counter. We created some openings but weren’t clinical. They were very clinical, we just lacked that.”
